Today the Church universal celebrates the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII declared what had already been a common belief in the Catholic Church that is, Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven. The earliest reports of the assumption of Mary go back to the 6th century. She was granted this grace as a promise that extends to all members of the Church. We give thanks to God for this gift. We pray for the openness to accept the will of the Father the way the Virgin Mary received the Word of God. St. Elizabeth in the encounter with Mary sums it up beautifully – blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. It was in the great ‘amen’ of Mary that what she received has become flesh in Her. She shared in that gift. It is a promise that extends to all those who hear and believe, in the Word of God. Let us not be afraid, then to listen and understand that what God promised to us in our baptism, one day would come to fulfillment in us.
